Selected to help protect the interiors beneath your skylights by reducing UV, visible light and solar heat. Its darker shade provides stronger control of incoming light, with a low-reflective exterior finish.

Appearance: the skylights will admit less daylight and have a more noticeable tint.

A light, subtle film for the living area, kitchen and outdoor retreat where retaining natural light and the existing appearance matters most. It offers UV and heat control to help reduce fading without significantly darkening the windows.

How do I choose?

For your combination of fade protection and glare control, Prestige 40 offers the stronger balance: 55% glare reduction and 66% estimated fade reduction, with a subtle change to the appearance of the glass. Prestige 70 is the lighter alternative where retaining the most daylight matters more than glare control, with 22% glare reduction and 64% estimated fade reduction. We can compare samples on your glass to finalise the choice for each area.

What do these figures mean for your home?+

Glare reduction & daylight

Glare reduction compares the reduction in visible light with the reference glass. VLT is the share of visible light that passes through the filmed glass. More glare control generally means less daylight; the room’s direction, time of day and your position also affect comfort.

SHGC & TSER

SHGC counts solar energy transmitted through the glass plus absorbed energy that flows inward. A value of 0.40 means about 40% of incident solar energy enters under the reference conditions. TSER is the proportion rejected by the glazing system. The TSER comparison shown here uses 3M’s published figures at a 60° angle on 6 mm clear glass; the SHGC figures use normal incidence. Neither figure promises a matching percentage reduction in room temperature or energy bills.

UV & infrared rejection

UV protection helps reduce a major contributor to fading. Infrared performance concerns only part of sunlight, and figures depend on the wavelength range used. A high narrow-band IR figure should be read alongside the whole-solar-energy measures.

Exterior reflectance

This describes visible light reflected outward. It helps assess a mirror-like appearance, but tint colour, transmitted light and the lighting on either side also influence how the windows look.

What causes fading?+

Protection needs to address more than UV.

Fading is caused by a combination of ultraviolet light, visible light, heat and other influences. A commonly used illustration attributes around 40% to UV, 25% to visible light, 25% to heat and 10% to other factors.

All three films reject 99.9% of UV. Their control of heat and visible light also contributes to protection. Actual fading depends on the material, dye stability and exposure, so the breakdown is a guide rather than a fixed formula for every furnishing.

How we feel heat — beyond infrared+

Sunlight can warm a room in more than one way.

Energy enters

Sunlight contains ultraviolet, visible and infrared energy. Visible light can also become heat when it is absorbed by furnishings and surfaces.

Surfaces warm

Glass absorbs some solar energy and releases heat to both sides. Sunlit floors and furniture warm the room as well.

You feel the result

Comfort depends on radiant heat, air temperature, airflow and the surrounding surfaces. A film’s effect depends on the whole room and glazing system.

For overall solar heat control, compare SHGC and TSER. A narrow-band infrared claim alone does not describe all the heat entering through a window.

Assess the glass

Glass construction, coatings, solar exposure and application position are considered together. The skylight specification and installation requirements are checked separately from the ground-level windows.

Prepare & protect

Thorough glass preparation, care around frames, floors and furnishings, and clean working practices set the foundation for the installation.

Fit & finish

Accurate fitting, controlled trimming and attention to edges and joins matter. Exterior finishing follows the applicable manufacturer requirements, including edge sealing where water can pool.

Inspect & support

Final inspection and clean-up are followed by curing and cleaning guidance, warranty information and a direct point of contact for questions after installation.

Limited lifetime

Residential cover for the internally applied film on your ground-level windows.

3M Prestige Exterior 20

Product cover for horizontal or sloping glass, including skylights. Exterior labour cover is limited to the first year.

What does the 3M warranty cover?

Cover includes manufacturing and material defects affecting the film’s appearance, adhesion and solar-control properties, such as peeling, bubbling, delamination and discolouration.

The warranty belongs to the original customer and is not transferable. Installation and care must meet 3M’s requirements. Scratches, damage and improper cleaning are excluded.

Prestige Exterior has a 10-year product warranty on vertical glazing; the 7-year period applies to the horizontal or sloping skylight application quoted here.

Contact AWT if you have a concern. We can inspect the film and assist with a manufacturer claim; retain your invoice and warranty record.

Lifetime workmanship guarantee

AWT provides a Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee for the duration of your occupancy, subject to the supplied terms and conditions. This covers our installation workmanship, alongside the 3M product warranties above.

Care after installation

Allow the film to cure naturally. Temporary haze and small water pockets can occur during drying. Do not press or pierce them, and wait at least 30 days before the first clean. Use soft materials and follow the supplied care guide.

Booking & payment

A 50% deposit is required on acceptance to secure materials and installation. The balance is payable in one payment by EFT or credit card immediately on completion.

Preparing for installation

Please provide clear access to the windows and remove movable obstructions and pets from the work area. Exterior work may need to be rescheduled if the weather prevents a suitable installation.
